Okay, but how do I buy tickets for this thing? This seems different than just going to a show.
True - this isn't a typical performance and there are a few ways to experience it! Click below to get an understanding of the different types of tickets available for Space Opera, and to figure out how much to pay on our sliding scale. If you know the basics, you can also scroll down to the FAQ section below this for more specific questions.
Frequently Asked Questions
I don't see all the ticket types currently available! When are tickets released? They release over time! At launch 30 Three Episode Saga tickets and 8 One Episode Experience Tickets for each episode are available. Throughout April and May we will release Galactic Witness and more One Episode Experience tickets. If you don't see the ticket type you want or something is sold out, you can submit the Early Notification form at the bottom of this page to be first in line for updates.
Can I buy tickets at the door? Galactic Witness tickets, which let you observe the play, are always available at the door. Some limited One Episode Experience tickets may be available at the door at the start of a day of play. Three Episode Saga are only available in advance.
Are there refunds? What if I buy a Three Episode Saga ticket and then can't make one day? No refunds are available for Space Opera tickets. However, we do allow ticket transfers. We are currently working on a system for this - for the time being, reach out to us via our Contact page or the email on your ticket if you know you will need to miss a day. If you have someone you want to transfer our ticket to, connect us with that person.
Are there discounts available? Yes! We offer group discounts on Three Episode Saga tickets for groups of 5 or more (bring your D&D group!) and for groups of more than 10 Galactic Witness tickets. Reach via our Contact page to talk to us about these discounts. Note that discounts will represent a lowering of the minimum on our sliding scale - we still encourage folks to assess their payment level based on our sliding scale guidance below. If there is true financial boundary for you in attending, you are always welcome to reach out to us to talk about how we can help.
Can I pay in installments for my ticket? Or raise how much I'm paying on the sliding scale later? We do offer Afterpay as a ticket payment option. Afterpay allows you to break your ticket price into multiple interest-free payments. We encourage ticket buyers to look into Afterpay's information on their website about how the service works to determine if this is right for you. We also welcome folks to pay more for their tickets than their original price. We are figuring out our system for this currently!
If I want to observe for multiple timeslots in one day do I need multiple Galactic Witness tickets? Yes - in order to manage the capacity of the room we are requiring attendees to have a ticket for each time slot. You are welcome to buy these in advance or at the door on the day of - we welcome you to use the lower end of the sliding scale if you are staying for multiple sessions in a day!
What if I can only make part of a day? It's important that players be able to attend an entire 12-7pm play session. Please only purchase a Three Episode Saga or One Episode Experience ticket if you know you are able to attend. If you aren't sure - come as a Galactic Witness! Of course, we know things happen, and we're always happy to work with you to transfer your ticket or accommodate special circumstances. Reach out to us through our contact form or the email on your ticket to talk to someone.
Why are there four different events on the ticket list? Which one do I go to? Space Opera takes place over three days (6/14, 6/21, 6/28). Due to constraints of the ticketing platform we have broken this into 4 events. One is purely for Three Episode Saga tickets, with which you would attend all 3 days. The other events are specific to a day of play and will feature One Episode Experience and Galactic Witness slots for that specific day. Keep an eye out for the dates listed in each event to make sure you're in the right one!
Is there a waitlist? Since we are not releasing all tickets at once, we have provided an Early Notification Form at the bottom of this page. We will establish a more formal waitlist should tickets sell out.
How Does Space Opera Ticketing Work?
The core Space Opera experience is a commitment that’s more like coming to a Dungeons and Dragons session than a theatrical production. You’ll shape the story, you’ll eat, you’ll choose it as the thing you do that day. There is a team of skilled artists facilitating you, performing for you, and caring for your experience for the duration of those hours. In order to keep the experience affordable for our audiences and still compensate our team at a livable wage and cover expenses, we have a sliding scale ticketing model to give you agency over how much you pay.
THERE ARE 3 WAYS TO EXPERIENCE THE PERFORMANCE
The Three Episode Saga: Tickets start at $90
You are a core player, guiding an epic story from inception to conclusion. This ticket gets you a seat at a player table for all three dates (6/14, 6/21, and 6/28), as well as a catered meal, COVID rapid testing, and masks for each day.
The One Episode Experience: Tickets start at $50
You are a player for one play session. This ticket gets you a seat at a player table for one date as well as a catered meal, COVID rapid testing, and masks for that day.
The Galactic Witness: Tickets start at $15
You are a non-playing observer during one of three 1.5-2 hour time slots in an episode. There may be options to engage with the story. Multiple tickets of this type may be purchased in advance or at the door.
WHAT DID SPACE OPERA COST?
Space Opera has been in development since 2022; during that time we’ve been grateful to receive support from the William Penn Foundation as well as the New England Foundation for the Arts. The current premiere has a budget of $159,000, the majority of which is supporting thousands of hours of labor from our team of artists.
HOW MUCH SHOULD I PAY?
A sliding scale is a system of mutuality where those who can afford to pay more and those who have less combine their resources, thus making it possible for Obvious Agency to make our work financially accessible, while still paying our artists and administrators a thriving wage.
Below you will find guidelines based on annual income to assist in your decision. We all exist within racialized capitalism. Consider what you would spend on a traditional theatrical production ticket (or three), and what you might pay for a lunch date (or three). We hope you feel both excited to give for this experience and safe to give within your own unique financial means. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us!
